Shopify POS Go Deprecation

Shopify POS Go devices were an all-in-one POS solution that included a card reader, barcode scanner and a mobile device. They were designed to be a simple and easy to use solution for merchants.

Shopify has announced that they will be deprecating the POS Go devices. This means that they will no longer be available for purchase, and only supported until 2026.

Which brings us to the big question, what does this mean for your business and the future of Shopify POS?

What does this mean for your business?

Shopify has said that they will continue to support the POS Go devices until 2026. This means that you can continue to use the devices, there are also limited replacements available.
However, new POS Go devices will no longer be available for purchase.

What does this mean for the future of Shopify POS?

Shopify is still committed to providing a great POS experience for merchants and investing in the platform.
But from a hardware perspective they want to allow merchants to design experiences, with devices, that works best for them. Shopify's role is to enable an integrated POS setup.

POS Go Devices were pretty good. However, they were ultimately limited in performance as it was a mid-range Android device under the hood. Similarly, because it was limited to Shopify POS, it was not possible to enrol the devices in a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution or wider device management.

Shopify still supports a wide range of hardware options for POS, including iPads, Android tablets, and other devices. This means that you can still use Shopify POS with a wide range of hardware options.

Shopify is also still selling other hardware, such as card readers, barcode scanners, and receipt printers. This means that you can still get the hardware you need to run your store, all available from the Shopify Hardware Store.

What are the alternatives?

If you are looking for an alternative to the POS Go devices, there are a few options available to you.

You can use iPhone, iPads, and Android devices in your retail store. As Shopify POS is available on both iOS and Android.

Taking Payments

If you are looking to be able to take payments on a device, you should look for devices that support Tap to Pay. This is a feature that allows your customers to pay with their contactless cards, phones, or watches.

Tap to Pay is supported on iPhone XS or newer devices, with iOS 16.7 or later versions.
Android support is coming, but as of writing is only available on a limited number of customers.

You can find out more about Tap to Pay and how to set it up on the Shopify Help Center.

Barcode Scanning

If you are looking for a barcode scanner, you can use the camera on your iOS or Android devices which can be just as fast as the integrated barcode scanner.
Or you can use a Bluetooth barcode scanner with your device. This will allow you to scan barcodes with Shopify POS.

What should you do next?

If you are currently using a POS Go device, you should continue to use it until 2026. Shopify will continue to support the devices until then and will make limited replacements available.

However, you should begin to plan for the future of your POS setup. You should consider what hardware you will use in the future, and the POS experience you would like for both your customers and staff members.
